Summary

This post includes links to a guide to edit in Canvas. Directions on how to use your Live Site, [PREVIEW] Site, and [DESIGN] site. Lastly, it explains the process to ensuring your changes roll into future terms.

Editing in Canvas

Fairly recently, you and your instructors have been empowered with the ability to edit content in Canvas! This means you can edit assignments, discussions, resource pages, etc. As you explore editing, please avail yourself of the following resources and best practices.

  • Canvas Tool Guides: This guide contains information about how to use a variety of canvas features and the best practices on how to use each tool.
  • Design & Instruction: This page has resources on concepts such as building community, engaging in online discussion, providing feedback to students, etc.

Course Site Types & When to Use Them

Site Type Definitions

  • Live Sites: You are currently teaching in what we refer to as the “Live Site.” This is the site in which you and students post feedback, submitting activities, etc. You and your instructors are empowered to edit the content in these sites (See resources above for tips!). When you edit content here, changes only last for the term and do not affect other sections or future terms.
  • Design Sites: Your [DESIGN] course shell is now considered an “Archive” site and should not be used unless you are actively in the course design process with EDI. All new course designs begin with a new [DESIGN] site.
  • Preview Site: Your [PREVIEW SITE] is going to be used for regular and on-going edits that you want to make independently. It is also the best place to preview a course’s content before the term begins.

Committing Edits to Future Terms

If you or an instructor has an edit that should remain in future terms across all sections of the course, there are two ways to accomplish this:

  1. You and your instructors can make edits in the Live Site and notify EDI (instructors should also CC PDs) that the content should be made permanent.
  1. You can make edits in the [PREVIEW SITE]! You have the same editing access in this site as you do in your Live Site. Your Preview Site is going to be used for regular and on-going edits that you want to make independently.
  1. Who has access to these? As PDs, you already have access to these sites. If you would like to give access to any of your instructors, please email us and we will be happy to add them!
  1. Why edit here? Since students will never have access to the Preview Site, it is a good place to make changes without risk. This is especially useful if you are making pervasive changes to a course.
  1. How can I ensure these changes remain in future terms? Email us notifying us you have made edits to this site and we will ensure these changes stay!

EDI is available to host a training session for your instructors or conduct 1:1 sessions. Contact EDI@adler.edu with any questions, including requests for a walkthrough on how to make edits!

Thank you!
